“These works are executed with knife and brush on sheet rock. This essential construction material and electrical conduit is rarely seen but always present under the finished and decorated surface of every building in which we work, live and play. Similarly, Anna Broome’s expressionistic figures lurk just beneath the surface of our day-to-day, civilized behavior. Passionate, energetic and primal, these picture/carvings are 3-dimentional, and familiar to us. Broome wants us to see the jagged edges of her material in visual contact with the painted and finished gallery walls unmediated by frame or matting. Exhibited in this manner her work has the feeling of excavated paintings from an ancient civilization or even earlier when the interior spirit was alive, apparent, celebrated and naked.”
